Tombstone Tuesday - My Father-In-Law, Carlos De León

Carlos De León
Birth:     November 4, 1918 in Soyapango, El Salvador
Death:     August 21, 2004 in San Salvador, El Salvador
Burial:   Parque Jardin Los Olivos - San Salvador, El Salvador

My father-in-law passed away in 2004 after a short battle with prostate cancer.  I can't say that I knew him well mainly because of the language barrier.  You see, Charlie was born and raised in El Salvador and of course, was a native Spanish speaker.  I on the other had, had only one year of Spanish in High School.

Our family visited El Salvador in 2000.  At the time, Charlie and I didn't spend much time together.  But the entire family was interested in this "gringa" that their son and brother married.  What I did notice about Charlie was that he loved spending time with his family; his son and daughter and the grandchildren were always at their house.  He also was still working as a shoe shine "boy" at the court house at the age of 82.

Charlie and Rosa came to visit us in the USA for Christmas 2003.  We drove to New Mexico to spend Christmas with my Mother.  It was darn cold, probably in the 40's or 50's during the day and much colder at night.  Both Charlie and Rosa were not used to that kind of weather, 74 degrees F is the average temperature in San Salvador.

Charlie was in snow for the only time while on this trip.  We'd gone up into the mountains to visit my cousin and it snowed pretty good while we where there.  Both Charlie and Rosa had to go outside to touch and smell and taste.  Charlie loved the snow, just not the cold!

On our way back to California, we stopped in Tombstone, Arizona.  Charlie loved the "Shoot Out" reenactment and even met some Saloon Girls that took a shine to him.  (Rosa was not thrilled with that, though!)

During this trip I found Charlie to be kind, happy, fun-loving, and a very curious man.

We miss you bunches!!
