Timeline for Wilford F. Hampton

NOTE: Mr. Hampton is NOT a direct relative. (He is the father of Minnie Lee Hampton, who was the fourth wife of my 2nd great grandfather, Elisha Crew.)  I was simply interested in locating some information about him, his wives and their children. A simple “timeline” is what I’ve provided below.  The records I found are mentioned below and where they can be located if one wishes to see them, but I have not sourced them to any genealogical standard.

Born: 1834

Grave marker gives date as 8/22/1834 [22 August 1834]. Death certificates states his age as "81 years, 3 days". Calculation based on this information would mean he was born 25 March 1834. Also, his place of birth is listed on all census records as Tennessee. His death certificate lists his place of birth as Alabama.

 

Marriage: 1 October 1860 in Obion County, Tennessee to Mary Catherine Wood

Civil War Service: Mr. Hampton served in the Confederate Army. (Index from Ancestry.com. The original records are available at Fold3.com)

The first card states the following: "Made his escape from island number 10 after Ragt. Surrendered April 1862. Never returned. Deserted."

Second card states the following: Absent. Escaped when surrendered Apl. 8/62. Home in Henry Co. Tenn." 

 

There is also a Union card with the name "W.F. Hampton". It reads " W. F. Hampton, Pvt. Co. G, 4 Reg't Tennessee Infantry.  Appears on RETURNS as follows: Mar 1864 - On fatigue duty loading & unloading RR cars.  Dec 1864 - Absent sick Dec 7/64"

Mary dies sometime after enumeration day of 1 June 1870. (Actual enumeration date was 6 June 1870.) and his remarriage in December of 1874.  Also, the family has moved from Missouri to Texas in the intervening years.

 

Marriage: 9 December 1874 in Travis County, Texas to R. M. Harris

Per Family Search index - Texas, Marriages, 1837-1973. [The original document is not available online at this time.]

R.M. Harris is Rebecca Mollie Adams. She was married to Mr. unknown Harris and her son is listed in the 1880 census as Mr. Hampton's step-son.

Rebecca Mollie Adams dies about October 1885 according to her grave marker in Evergreen Cemetery - Gustine, Comanche, Texas. (She was the first person buried in Evergreen Cemetery.) [Find A Grave Memorial# 21642277]

 

Marriage: 20 December 1885 in Comanche County, Texas to Mrs. Margaret Allen.

Per Ancestry Index  - The original document is available on FamilySearch.org.

[Margaret was granted a Civil War widows pension in 1934 for Mr. Hampton's service. In that file, she gives their marriage date as 1886 10 Feb.]

Margaret is Margaret Ellen Carver. She was married at least once prior to marrying Mr. Hampton.

1910 Census - Not found. Mr. Hampton should be enumerated in the 1910 census but I have yet find him there.

 

 

Death: 25 March 1915 in Gustine, Comanche, Texas.

Per death certificate and grave marker. (His death certificate lists his name as "William F. Hampton".) (Find A Grave Memorial# 61167371. Death certificate is available on FamilySearch.org.)
