<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">After seeing this newspaper clipping, my cousin, Gregg </span><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Davies, related the following story about Charles J. Crew, Jr. (Charlie) on the History of Winn Parish Facebook Group:</span><br />
<br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Uncle Charlie Crew was my wife's great great uncle b. 1842 in Coosa County, Alabama. The family, along with many Wheeling, St. Maurice, Montgomery area folks, came from Coosa County prior to the Civil War. The small village of Crews in the extreme SW of Winn Parish is named for Uncle Charlie's father, Charles Jefferson Crew, who was a Baptist minister and who started New Salem Baptist Church, still going. He apparently named the church after their old home church in Coosa County, Alabama, which was Salem Baptist Church. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">The gent mentioned in the article may have been the catalyst for the clean up of the old West & Kimbrel Clan. He lost at least two brothers, possibly three during the war. He was a veteran himself. His mother knew of the other sons' loss but had not heard from Charlie for some time after the war's end and assumed he was also a casualty. He walked home from North Carolina when the war ended and eventually caught some sort of boat and landed at St. Maurice. He walked home and en route he stopped at a common well on Harrisonburg Road for water. The well was near what we would know today as the Harry Horn place. He dropped a bucket into the well and when the water sloshed he saw a hand sticking up from beneath the water line. He immediately ran home to the old Crew place which is directly behind the current day Tilton place. His mother saw him running down the 'lane' as folks called a straight road back then. She was so moved that she ran to meet him and he ran right past her to another well. After he'd gotten water and gathered himself, he told of the hand in the well and people began pointing fingers at suspects, i. e., the West Clan. The Crew place in Wheeling (not at Crews) remains in the family.</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;"></span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">That’s quite a story!</span> <br />

Oh My! – A Crew Family Marriage<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">My 5th great-grandfather, James Crew married Ann Crew, making her my 5th great-grandmother, on 7 September 1773. Hinshaw’s Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy Volume VI lists their marriage on page 165 as follows:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">1773, 9,7. Ann, dt Ellyson, Charles City Co., m James CREW</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">1773, 9, 7. James, Charles City Co., s John, Charles City Co.; m at Frs MH, Charles City Co., Ann CREW, dt Ellyson, Charles City Co.</span></blockquote>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">In the book, The Crew Generations by Erman Crew, Sr., he states:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">James was not marrying a cousin. The Quaker records show two sets of CREW’s in Virginia. John and Ellyson were not kin.</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Well, that is not exactly true. James Crew and Ann Crew shared a great-grandfather making them second cousins.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">So without further ado, here is the actual marriage document and the transcription of said document.</span><br />

I thought I’d use this day to write down my goals and to-dos for the next three months.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"></span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bunoa52QkIw/VtTxWbI2f5I/AAAAAAAACaw/N3DV9Bou57g/s1600-h/9462216-118379168_9-s4-v1%25255B6%25255D.png"><img alt="9462216-118379168_9-s4-v1" border="0" height="260" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g7uRdmRPjec/VtTxWiPjqFI/AAAAAAAACa0/0V2e8X7n9Co/9462216-118379168_9-s4-v1_thumb%25255B4%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="9462216-118379168_9-s4-v1" width="260" /></a></span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I’ve switched gears in my research and have decided to work on my Crew line, which includes the names Crew, Malone, Bailey, Binford, Ladd, Ellyson, and Stanley [And probably a few others I’ve missed.]. My mother’s 83rd birthday is in a few months and I’d like to give her a family tree book. In doing this, I’ve started a new Crew surname family tree in RootsMagic and am trying to update both my Ancestry tree and WikiTree. It’s a lot of work but really worth it.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">So now to my To-Do list:</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">*Ancestry:</span> <br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">My subscription runs out before the middle of March, so I need to make sure I get all the records I can into my tree before that time.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Sync with FTM as a backup.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Download new GEDCOM file as further backup</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">*RootsMagic database:</span> <br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Add names and sources to newly created database. (Trying to learn RM as I go. </span><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I will most likely use this as the beginning of the book.)</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">* WikiTree:</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">The WikiTree Crew line is really a mess.</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Merge duplicate profiles. (I have two in the works currently and one Unmerged Match that includes three profiles.)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Add children of Charles Jefferson Crew</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Add children of Elisha Crew</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Add children of Jacob Crew (waiting on merge)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Add children of John Crew</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Follow Malone line</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Follow Sarah Ladd Crew line</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Unfortunately, if I want to get the book to my mom for her birthday, WikiTree is going to be last on the list.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"></span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">As I go along, I will also need to update my ahnentafel which is located <a href="http://kinfolknews.blogspot.com/p/ahnentafel.html" target="_blank">here</a> on this blog. I already see where I can make some updates.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"></span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Further breakdown of these items may be in order but for now, it’s back to work.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"></span> <br />

On Facebook many, many people shared what they remembered about that day.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">For me, it has always been a bit surreal. You see, January 28 is my birthday. It is somewhat strange that I don’t have a vivid memory of seeing the disaster. What I do remember was going to school that day and heading off to my first class. I was a high school junior. There was a TV set up and turned on, but I don’t remember watching the launch. I do remember seeing the split vapor trail and the stunned silence in the room. Later in the day, I remember seeing the video of the accident play over and over on the news and seeing President Ronald Reagan give a very moving speech about the disaster. All I remember is bits and pieces.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"></span> <br />
<br />
<img alt="The Challenger Accident " border="0" height="310" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B9iuHde1LxY/Vq1qcHkvBcI/AAAAAAAACZg/LX9ZxWBhRWU/S86-38989%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="" width="413" /> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"></span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">My 1st cousin 1x removed posted his remembrance on Facebook and kindly let me repost it here: </span> <br />
<blockquote>
<b><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Nathan Schuit:</span></b><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"> I was 9 years old in 4th? grade. All the kids were gathered in the Edgewood Elementary school library. Huddled around a AV rack with a fairly large TV for the day. Everyone was excited because its was the shuttle, but more so because there was a school-teacher aboard. When it blew, I remember thinking that I hope everyone was ok. I was too young to realize there was no hope. I don't remember teachers freaking out or turning it off or anything. We all sat and watched. RIP Astronauts.</span> <br />
<br />
</blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">My cousin Aerin Holt was kind enough to pen this remembrance for inclusion here.</span> <br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">In 1995, my husband and I rented a small one-bedroom house in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. His mom lived in the area. He wanted to be close to family and I was able to find work dancing in a ballet company there and in Miami. One thing we both enjoyed was following NASA and the space shuttle program. We lived so near the Kennedy Space Center and in our enthusiasm we wanted to see the shuttles launch with our own two eyes. So we would drive the distance to Cape Canaveral. We saw both the shuttles Discovery and Atlantis launch. Of course, most of the launches would take place in the morning hours and I think we had to wake up fairly early to arrive where hundreds of other folks had the same idea. There would be vehicles lined up head-to-head and parked alongside a dirt road. The launch site was quite a few miles beyond a field of weeds, but I remember the shuttle would stand up in its launch site with all of the mechanics that you see in the photos and the shuttle was quite easy to see and thrilling. NASA was quite accommodating and would use big speakers to keep us up to date on all the "NASA talk". We could hear that the astronauts where getting prepared and a count down. As you can imagine, people would walk up and down the row of cars selling t-shirts and other memorabilia. Most people would sit on truck tailgates or on chairs near their cars. We tended to crawl up the the hood of our van and hang out as we enhanced our Florida tans. Mostly it was a lot of waiting until launch time. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">When the announcement came that the countdown would soon begin, it got very exciting. I remember that we couldn't actually see the astronauts walk into the shuttle and I was disappointed about that. But our kind announcer would tell us when the astronauts had taken their seats inside the shuttle. And then the shuttle's engines would start to roar, beginning with a low hum and increasing in velocity until it was quite loud and vibrating our van. When I was younger, I also had experienced horrible earthquakes in Southern California. I think this was worse in regard to the vibration that rolled the earth and the very loud rumbling sounds that accompanied it. Except that it wasn't worse, because the air was full of excitement and expectation. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Then the count-down begins "10, 9, 8 (and boy can a second be sooooo long) 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 1" and the velocity of the shuttles departure from the ground was intense! Off it would go into the air so fast accompanied by a giant plume. Once my eyes adjusted, I would follow it up, up, up getting smaller and smaller with its dense contrail traveling straight up behind it until there was nothing more to see. Only sky would be left and I would wonder what it must be like to be up there.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I think some of those shuttle launches may have had some politicians on board. I think a Senator or a Governor. While we didn't really give a hoot who they were, it was exciting to imagine that perhaps one day anyone, perhaps even ourselves, might be shuttled into space, to the moon or beyond. It was exciting. I don't remember for sure, but perhaps one of the shuttles I saw launch had the first female astronaut on board. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Grade school teacher, Christa McAuliffe became a celebrity when NASA picked her to go on the space shuttle Challenger and to bring home her experience for her students. Wow. It was an evolution! It was extraordinary. What an opportunity for her and for all of us. And who might be next? Of course, my husband wanted to get up to the Cape to see this launch too, but for some reason or another, the time didn't work or I wasn't feeling well. I can't remember why we didn't go. But we decided to pass even though we were extremely interested and disappointed not to be there in person. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">January 28, 1986 must have been a weekend day because we were both home, not working. We opted to spend the day outside on our enclosed patio, snacking and enjoying the Florida sunshine. I remember it was a very sunny day and not a cloud in the sky. I remember waking and thinking that it was a good day for a launch. I remember having had some laughter and fun while I sat on a lounge chair. While leaning back and looking up into the sky, I suddenly saw a very thick contrail and a plane. I guess I had forgotten about the shuttle launch by that time and my mind couldn't get around it. I didn't think it was possible to see the shuttle from our home patio in Ft. Lauderdale... but it slowly dawned on me that this is exactly what I was seeing and my husband saw it too and for a minute we were both so thrilled! Yes, we were thrilled to see that we could even see the shuttle and wow, we didn't travel to the Cape but we were seeing it now any how... and then... then... </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">There was no sound that we could hear. The contrail and shuttle suddenly turned into a great big ball in the sky and went no farther upward. A giant plume, contrail dust, smoke, particles.... I really don't know what shot out from the center of the ball like an explosion. The surreal silence was shocking as my mind slowly worked to find the realization that the shuttle, with all those heroic astronauts and that lovely schoolteacher, had just simply blown up! They had vanished! The horror of it slowly dawned as we watched particles falling from the sky. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Of course, we turned on the TV where news broadcasts had erupted into the many reports confirming what we had just witnessed... that the shuttle had indeed exploded mid-air. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Friends came over and we listened to the news reports about the tragedy most of the day. I remember for several days after, we always drove with our headlights on. Everyone did this. Elton John sang "Spaceman" from radios playing over and over again. And of course, this was a huge stain to NASA's Space Shuttle program. I don't think that the program ever recovered. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I heard a report that the astronauts may not have died instantly. I guess the cabin holding crew fell back to earth and apparently, it was assumed that they didn't die until after the explosion and their exact time of death can't be confirmed. I always imagine how horrific it must have been for them. And then we all watched TV interviews from families and of course no one could forget that Christa McAuliffe left school children behind who loved her and expected her to return with stories of amazing space adventures but now, she would never return. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">There is no way to give this a happy end. I'm sure Ms. McAulfee was chosen for her flight because of her sense of adventure, her knowledge of science and her interest in space. And I'm certain that she would have wanted the space and shuttle programs to continue and I'm sure she would have wanted that her tragic end was a beginning for more progress rather than an end to the dreams and ideals that the program embodied. It was so sad when the Space Shuttle no longer attempted to take civilians into space and then the Space Shuttle era ended.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Recently while looking around at online trees, I happened upon a website with a long and detailed ancestor report for the Crew family. It included an entry for my 4th great-grandfather, Elisha Crew. The Elisha Crew in this report was listed as born on 22 February 1776 (correct), married to Charlotte Dean on 23 December 1830 (who?) and died in 1870.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">First thing I did was double-check my sources for Elisha Crew. I have the following records for him:</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: symbol;"><span style="mso-list: ignore;">·<span style="line-height: normal;"> </span></span></span>Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy Vol. I – Birth date listed</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: symbol;"><span style="mso-list: ignore;">·<span style="line-height: normal;"> </span></span></span>1810 US Federal Census in Northampton County, North Carolina</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Bell MT;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: symbol;"><span style="mso-list: ignore;">·<span style="line-height: normal;"> </span></span></span>1820 US Federal Census in Washington County, Georgia</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: symbol;"><span style="mso-list: ignore;">·<span style="line-height: normal;"> </span></span></span>1830 US Federal Census in Henry County, Georgia</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: symbol;"><span style="mso-list: ignore;">·<span style="line-height: normal;"> </span></span></span>1831 Property Tax List in Henry County, Georgia</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: symbol;"><span style="mso-list: ignore;">·<span style="line-height: normal;"> </span></span></span>1837 Property Tax List in Henry County, Georgia</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0.5in; margin-right: 0in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: symbol;"><span style="mso-list: ignore;">·<span style="line-height: normal;"> </span></span></span>1840 US Federal Census in Henry County, Georgia</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I also know his wife was Elizabeth Malone. (She is a story for another time.) Elisha and Elizabeth were married after he was disowned by the Quakers in 1804 and before the 1810 Census. Elizabeth is alive and well living with her son in the 1850 Census but Elisha is nowhere to be found. He most likely died between 1840 and 1850 probably in Henry County, Georgia.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I have other records that are narrowing down dates and locations for my Elisha, but the basic timeline is the same. He was likely born in Virginia. He came with his parents and siblings to Northampton County, North Carolina before 1810. (The Quaker records indicate that his parents and family came to N.C. in 1782 from Henrico County, Virginia.) He is still in North Carolina in 1810 and moved to Georgia before 1820 where he remained.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">So who is the Elisa Crew in the online ancestor report? The short answer is I have no idea. He most certainly is not my 4th great-grandfather, but I wanted to see what I could locate about him.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Since the only information I had was the marriage to Charlotte Dean on 23 December 1830, I put that information into Ancestry and come up with this indexed record.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<img alt="Crew Dean marriage index" border="0" height="226" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AE1P4SM7hCU/Vqw7_cBpniI/AAAAAAAACYg/HK3DoVjadKc/Crew%252520Dean%252520marriage%252520index%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Crew Dean marriage index" width="290" /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Now I had a place to look for Charlotte’s husband, Elisha Crew: Virginia!</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">After another search, I located an 1820 US Federal Census and an 1830 US Federal Census for Elisha Crew. </span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">This Elisha Crew, who married Charlotte Dean, was a Free Person of Color!</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">

<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I not able to locate this Elisha Crew in any further documents.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">But what about Charlotte? Could I locate her before her marriage to Elisha? Since they married in December of 1830, Charlotte was not enumerated with Elisha in the 1830 Census. I took a shot and looked for Charlotte in the 1830 Census.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">What I found was a Charlotte Deane, also a Free Person of Color, <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>listed as living in Richmond, Virginia. <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I am sitting at my desk trying to put down in my calendar everything I already have planned for 2016. One of the big things I like to do is look at the genealogy webinars available and mark them in my calendar.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"><strong>What is a webinar?</strong></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">
<br /></div>
</blockquote>
<strong><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">How do I find webinars?</span></strong><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Probably one of the most well-known webinar providers is Legacy Family Tree. They have what they affectionately call “Webinar Wednesday”, as the standard day and time is Wednesday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. You can find a complete list of their 2016 webinars on their website at </span><a href="https://draft.blogger.com/null" style="href: "http://www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com";"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">. Live webinars are free to attend and the recorded webinars are available to view free of charge on the website for a week or so after the live webinar. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">This year I’ve also obtained lists of 2016 webinars from the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) and Illinois State Genealogical Society (ISGS). </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">The list for the SCGS webinars can be found on their website at </span><a href="https://draft.blogger.com/null" style="href: "http://www.scgsgenealogy.com/webinar/jes-index.html";"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">http://www.scgsgenealogy.com/webinar/jes-index.html</span></a><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">. The SCGS has 22 webinars scheduled for 2016.The schedule for the SCGS webinars is the first Saturday of the month in the morning and the third Wednesday of the month in the evening. All live webinars are free to attend, but only SCGS members can view the recorded webinars. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0pt; word-spacing: normal;">

The ISGS has 12 webinars scheduled for 2016, one each month. Their schedule seems to be the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Pacific Time. All live webinars are free to attend, but only ISGS members can view the recorded webinars.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "bell mt";"><span style="font-size: medium;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UYNiHybsEbA/VnTFQ3cu3bI/AAAAAAAACXM/bpdw4VnfTtk/s1600/star-wars-force-awakens-official-poster-691x1024.jpg" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" width="324" /></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "bell mt";"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "bell mt"; font-size: large;">Today <em>Star Wars: The Force Awakens</em> arrives in theaters. I not a huge Star Wars fan. I don’t dress up and you won’t catch me waiting in line for hours just to get a ticket. I will, however, eventually see the movie. After all, I’ve seen the other six and I want to know how the story plays out.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "bell mt";"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "bell mt";">Yesterday the Facebook page, </span><span style="font-family: "bell mt"; font-weight: normal;">Entertainment Earth, posted the below meme. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "bell mt"; font-size: medium;"></span> <img border="0" height="472" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CGlZc1Nb5yU/VnTDi0yEP7I/AAAAAAAACXA/-LYADdx1Xcc/s1600/Star%2BWars.jpg" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" width="472" /><br />
<span style="font-family: "bell mt"; font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "bell mt"; font-size: large;">So to answer the question here's how old I was and a little insight into when I actually saw the Star Wars series.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "bell mt";"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "bell mt";">I was about 8 when the first <i>Star Wars</i> movie was released. I had no interest in the movie and I do not remember any hoopla about Star Wars</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "bell mt";"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "bell mt";">I didn't see <i>Star Wars</i> or any of the series until My Young Man wanted to see them, probably around 2002 when Episode II came out. He would have been 7 years old.</span></span><br />
<br />

Montgomery<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Joseph D. Montgomery is my 4th great-uncle, or actually my half 4th great-uncle. He is the son of James Montgomery (1805 – 1878) [ My 4th great-grandfather] and his third wife, Mary DeGaris (1813 – 1878).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I have been able to locate Joseph in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census living in Black Creek, Shelby County, Missouri with his parents and younger brother, David. In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census he is still living in Black Creek, Shelby County, Missouri, and is listed as a 27 year old single farmer. [Cue the online dating site jingle.]</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I have never been able to locate any of this Montgomery family in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census and was not able to locate Joseph in any other document besides the two above censuses. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I knew there was a Joseph Montgomery buried in the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, but the marker is barely readable. The Find A Grave contributor who took the photos said even in person the marker was hard to read. What we did figure out was he died in February 1883, which isn’t a lot of help. So I had no idea who this Joseph Montgomery was or how he fit into the family.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">While I was searching newspaper articles on Pearson Clifford “P.C.” Montgomery, I stumbled across the following two articles.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MXoAaeP0YXk/VlqFJJ8jsRI/AAAAAAAACUQ/H1XOj-wZIRo/s1600-h/J%252520D%252520Montgomery%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="J D Montgomery" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6smNnebw6wA/VlqFKHZg0NI/AAAAAAAACUU/LLNgQtO2Kjc/J%252520D%252520Montgomery_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="448" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="J D Montgomery" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EBM5-ieQjfw/VlqFKflgpaI/AAAAAAAACUY/5A2tCHEcjBA/s1600-h/J%252520D%252520Montgomery%2525202%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="J D Montgomery 2" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ph3Y9b4Cz2s/VlqFKrjH3JI/AAAAAAAACUc/JoN5ZGLstaQ/J%252520D%252520Montgomery%2525202_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="312" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="J D Montgomery 2" width="640" /></a></span><br />
<h6>
</h6>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">I almost didn’t realize what I had. Here are two articles telling me P.C.’s brother, Joseph, died in New Orleans from an accident in February 1883. This matches the marker in Greenwood Cemetery!</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Sadly, there is no other mention of Joseph that I could locate. One would think there must be a newspaper article about a train accident the eventually killed a man, but I have not located any such article. And there is also no death record in New Orleans for Joseph that I could locate. Also, no obituary. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">So all I know about Joseph is located in six documents – The Montgomery Family Bible transcription that lists his date of birth, the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Federal Censuses, the two newspaper articles, and his grave marker. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">The search continues…</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Here are two obituaries that appeared in the local New Orleans papers. Although the obituary asks the Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio, papers to copy the obituary, I have not found any evidence that the notice was posted in either area</span>.<br />
<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JgFdgSwiuQU/Vlpe79mAvKI/AAAAAAAACTs/1FZJBzZ8d9U/s1600-h/P%252520C%252520Montgomery%252520Obit%2525202%25255B19%25255D.jpg"><img alt="P C Montgomery Obit 2" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2vZ6SBdTLvI/Vlpe8QwgfmI/AAAAAAAACTw/LwRAUNozHgw/P%252520C%252520Montgomery%252520Obit%2525202_thumb%25255B13%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="480" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="P C Montgomery Obit 2" width="548" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">This obituary specifically calls for the members of the Knights of Pythias to “pay the last tribute of respect to our late Brother” prior to his funeral. The Knights of Pythias is mentioned in P. C.’s will.</span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hlMlhLou3QA/Vlpe8_3MZFI/AAAAAAAACT0/wQxqZLgR7Do/s1600-h/P%252520C%252520Montgomery%252520obit%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img alt="P C Montgomery obit" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ug4DdHSvLMQ/Vlpe9UiiViI/AAAAAAAACT4/ibqjtnOphz4/P%252520C%252520Montgomery%252520obit_thumb%25255B10%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="768" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="P C Montgomery obit" width="592" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Newspaper article about the funeral: </span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jMFDs5lXLJg/Vlpe9zfpSLI/AAAAAAAACTI/dEVTIlBN90w/s1600-h/P%252520C%252520Montgomery%252520funeral%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img alt="P C Montgomery funeral" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oFjgugH7C9g/Vlpe-UYRlqI/AAAAAAAACTM/U0vYWV8ZM-I/P%252520C%252520Montgomery%252520funeral_thumb%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="768" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="P C Montgomery funeral" width="612" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I found this mention of P.C.’s funeral quite interesting. It says that the funeral was contacted at the Canal street Presbyterian church. [I wonder what other family items might be currently hidden there?] The funeral notices say that “the funeral will take place from the residence of his son”. From that line, I thought the funeral took place there, but now I believe everyone met at Wallace’s place and then went to the funeral. Possibly, P.C.’s body was at Wallace’s house for a wake, then moved to the church for the funeral. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Several men are listed as pall bearers including men representing the Knights of Pythias, “the steamboat fraternity”, and the Board of Underwriters. [I bet the steamboat fraternity is mentioned in P.C.’s will and he worked for the Board of Underwriters after retiring as a steamboat captain.]</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">The last sentence – “Peace be to his ashes.” – hints that he was cremated and buried rather then is body buried. [Hopefully, this will be explained when I get my hands on his death certificate. Also, since I know that his remains. along with his wife’s. were moved from Louisiana to Kentucky in 1894, his being cremated would make a whole lot more sense then transporting coffins.]</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">My favorite sentence in the whole paragraph is this one: </span><br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">All the steamboats in port yesterday had their flags at half-mast in token of respect to the memory of the deceased, who had many friends among the boatmen and but few, if any, enemies.</span></blockquote>

<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">My father, J C Bynum, worked for Hi-Shear for some 30 years and retired from this company about 1990. Over the years we attended the company picnic several times. On 13 September, 1978, Hi-Shear held the company picnic at the plant. They called it Hi-Shear’s Family Fun Day. I was six years old.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Since the picnic was held at the plant, they offered tours, where you could walk around the plant and see all the machines and offices. Here my parents and I have run into one of my fathers co-workers and his family apparently. </span><br />
<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_CnWBqTs6K8/Vle55_tqJ5I/AAAAAAAACRQ/Z_Zj_H9cXOk/yir75vus_original%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800"><img alt="yir75vus_original" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UlMRYjR96Ag/Vle56ngmrFI/AAAAAAAACRU/TVGxFz3ITQg/yir75vus_original_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="413" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="yir75vus_original" width="640" /></a><br />
<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Bzl8Q--t8Js/Vle565NoB0I/AAAAAAAACRc/XVhhmfz0Kek/s1600-h/car39kew_original%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img align="left" alt="car39kew_original" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CzhnCf68c10/Vle57P9tizI/AAAAAAAACRg/KyoY-ZtyBT4/car39kew_original_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="480" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; float: left; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="car39kew_original" width="330" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Here we are looking at one of the offices. I completely terrified. I know there are big machines in dad’s plant and I can hear them, as some of them are running during the tour. They were LOUD! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">[As a side note, what the heck are my mom and I wearing?! I know it’s 1975 and all, but goodness gracious that’s horrible!]</span><br />
<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Here we are looking at the machine that my dad worked on. We were not supposed to be that close. We had left the roped off “tour” to get a closer look as dad’s machine. You can plainly see that I had been crying. As I said, those machines where LOUD and I didn’t like that at all. Once Dad got me to stop crying, I was fascinated about how the machine made “nuts and bolts”. I remember this quite well. [I simply love this photo!]</span><br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gjzQJFRV13o/Vle58j-oJ-I/AAAAAAAACR4/hOHT6pzybts/s1600-h/faj85yuc_original1%25255B17%25255D.jpg"><img align="right" alt="faj85yuc_original1" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DL5fIo3MOjI/Vle59A7IOGI/AAAAAAAACR8/jmgAuwL8ewU/faj85yuc_original1_thumb%25255B13%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="165" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; float: right; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="faj85yuc_original1" width="244" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Here I am later in the day playing in the arcade area they had set up as part of the fun day. I loved this game and spent most of the afternoon there. It’s a bowling game. You will notice that my parents are nowhere to be found. They were probably back at the food tents talking with dad’s co-workers. Six years old and completely unsupervised. [ Oh the horror! ]</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">The above photo was part of a Hi-Shear newsletter that came out after <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qWQfFh1-vZY/Vle59k91m7I/AAAAAAAACSI/9J-e8OgulG0/s1600-h/faj85yuc_original2%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img align="right" alt="faj85yuc_original2" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uDnQzYR28Xk/Vle599SuOVI/AAAAAAAACSM/tVTIclqmZUg/faj85yuc_original2_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="113" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; float: right; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="faj85yuc_original2" width="244" /></a>the event. </span><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Here is the little blurb that went along with the pictures in the newsletter.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Clearly a good time was had by all!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Every year about this time, I purchase a new calendar and go through the year and add all the events that I know about. Most of them are holidays, personal events like birthdays, and school schedules as both my men are still in school. When it comes to planning my genealogy studies, I’ve been very lax about it; simply adding things I want to do as they come up. This year, however, I already know of a few things that I can add to my calendar.</span><br />
<h5>
</h5>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong><u>GenTools Study Group with DearMyrtle and Cousin Russ</u></strong> – Nine sessions starting next Wednesday, December 2 at 9 am Pacific Time. (I didn’t find an explanation on the exact topics to be covered on DearMyrtle’s blog, but the </span></span><a href="http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/p/geneawebinars-calendar.html"><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">GeneaWebinars Calendar</span></a><span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"> can be found by clicking on the link.)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"><strong><u>Legacy Family Tree Webinars</u></strong> – Looking over their new website, I noticed that there are four webinars in December and five in January 2016 posted. Heading over there to sign-up for those ASAP. Looking forward to the entire 2016 schedule coming out soon! <a href="http://familytreewebinars.com/upcoming-webinars.php" title="http://familytreewebinars.com/upcoming-webinars.php">http://familytreewebinars.com/upcoming-webinars.php</a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Also going on my calendar, is the just announced, </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"><strong><u>2016 ESM's QuickLessons Study Group</u></strong> – This group will be discussing the QuickLessons of Elizabeth Shown Mills and lead expertly by DearMyrtle. The group begins on March 16, 2016 and will run through September 28, 2016, with a few breaks in between. All the information about this study group can be found on DearMyrtle’s blog: <a href="http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/2015/11/2016-esms-quicklessons-study-group.html" title="http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/2015/11/2016-esms-quicklessons-study-group.html">http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/2015/11/2016-esms-quicklessons-study-group.html</a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">As you can see, my genealogical education calendar is really filling up! </span><br />

Here’s the mission for this week:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Arial Rounded MT Bold; font-size: medium;">1) Who is your most recent immigrant ancestor? I'm assuming that your ancestors moved from one country to another at some point in time.<br />2) Tell us about that person - name, birth and death, emigration and immigration country and port, date or year of immigration, etc.</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">My most recent immigrant ancestors would be those German immigrants that are part of the founding of New Braunfels, Comal County, Texas.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">My 3rd great-grandfather, Herman Spangenberg (1842 – 1905) came over in 1845 on the <em>Johann Dethardt, </em>with his parents, Christoph and Elisabeth (nee Voigt) Spangenberg and four other children. Christoph is listed on the Founding Families memorial in New Braunfels.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Herman’s wife, Anna Marie Wersdoefer (1843 – 1920), came over in 1844 with her parents, Joseph and Anna (nee Schmidt) Wersdoefer and another child on the <em>Ferdinand</em>. Joseph is also listed on the Founding Families memorial in New Braunfels. </span><br />

With them was their son and my 3rd great-grandfather, Rudolph Schmidt (about 1830 – ?).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Rudolph’s wife, Heinrike Friedrike Haag, was in Comal County, Texas by 1855 but I do not know when or where she came to Texas.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">In page two, Pearson continues to list five more properties, all insurance policies with the exception of number 9 which is household goods and furniture. The Knights of Pythias insurance policy is of interest because it shows that he was indeed a member of said organization. I was aware of this for some time as this fraternal organization and secret society was mentioned in one of his obituaries. I tried several years ago to get any information about Pearson from them with no luck. Maybe I’ll try again. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Pearson gives one-half of what ever he gets from the Propeller Empire claim to his mother-in-law, Matilda Shinkle Porter. As I said previously, I have not been able to locate what this claim is about. Will need further research.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">He gives all the rest of his property to his daughter, Carrie, son, Wallace, and his sister-in-law , Clara Porter.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">The last paragraph gives his sister-in-law, Clara Porter, complete care and control of his daughter, Carrie.</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;"></span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Quick notes:</span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">I am a bit surprised that Pearson does not further mention the New National claim as it is $14,400, much more than the Propeller Empire claim. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Bell MT; font-size: medium;">Usufruct definitions: From the book, A to Zak: A Comprehensive Dictionary for Genealogists & Historians – to use and have the profit from land or other property which belongs to a group and which may be used only as long as the person is a member of the group.
